The air smells like an airport smoking lounge. Harmful chemicals are entering the body and implanting life threatening diseases. In China, pollution levels are higher than the rest of the world combined. Factories producing toxic carcinogens into the environment is having a huge impact on Chinese citizens. This problem, created by humans, is absolutely necessary to resolve. The pollution will only continue to grow if no action is taken. To start, as the economy grows, the environment continues to get worse. Due to the rapid increase in globalization over the past 25 years, there is a high demand for products which in turn means rushed factories. With the increased need for mass products at fast rates, factories are ignoring safety precautions in order to work to demand. Also, the fine for violating them is less than the cost for using the protective equipment (Jing). Originally the government wasn’t helping the problem as they hid the fact that it was happening and censored it from the media. The smog was also considered to be fog for many years as reported by weather stations. Recently however the government has worked to try to control the pollution problem. One example of this problem is at river in Xinglong where there is heavy industry and the chromium waste in warehouses produces a chemical runoff which goes into the river. Chromium, in large doses, has negative health effects and has been related to cancer . The water in this river is 200 times higher than the national standard. This water along with many other similar rivers in China is used to water crops due to the lack of rainfall (Datta). Unsuspecting victims who eat these crops or even touch the water in the rivers instantly are at high risk for health problems, even death (Journeymanpictures). Another example of how humans have caused this problem is by chemical emissions and the burning of fossil fuels. Due to the rapid increase of motor vehicles, high levels of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide have been released into the air (Pan). Not only has the pollution caused a large number of deaths, but it is also in connection with bronchitis, dermatitis, lymphoma, and leukemia (Campbell). For example, 493 students were diagnosed with myriad debilitating conditions from Changzhou Foreign Language School forcing them to move to a new school due to findings of chlorobenzene levels 78,899 times acceptable levels in the soil and 94,799 times in the groundwater (Campbell). These levels are ridiculously unsafe and are putting children at risk for health problems. Some may argue that similar to evolution by raising kids in polluted areas they will adapt to the environment. However, this isn’t the case because it will injure or impair them on day one and on day two they won’t get any more injured because they are already broken (Jing). Children should be a primary concern when it comes to dealing with pollution. Kids are still running around playing basketball even after the air quality index has exceeded 500 times the hazardous level. When a person exercises, they breathe 5-10 times more deeply (Jing). This means that these children are exposing themselves to an even more dangerous environment. There are ways to go about solving this problem.
