The Aging Brain
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, all the characters are in the teenage stages of their lives. In the play two families, the Capulets and the Montagues have been in a feud for a long time. Unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet, the son and daughter of their families, fall in love and make many poor decisions which results in the death of six lives in Verona. Teenagers have been proven to have underdeveloped brains. Because Romeo, Juliet, and Mercutio have underdeveloped brains, which causes them to make poor decisions. One trait that the teenagers have due to underdeveloped brains is impulsiveness. Romeo acts very impulsive in the play Romeo and Juliet because he is doing everything without thinking. One example of Romeo being impulsive is when Juliet is speaking to herself on the balcony scene and Romeo speaks out at her. He says, “Call me but and I’ll be new baptized. Henceforth I will never be Romeo.” Romeo is saying he would change his name just to be with Juliet. This …show more content…
Mercutio takes risks in the play Romeo and Juliet. One of these risks is fighting Tybalt, which lead to his death. Mercutio is the instigator of the fight when he said to Tybalt, “Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher by the ears (3.1 81-83).” When Mercutio says this to Tybalt, he is saying he wants to challenge Tybalt to fight him. This is risky because, although Mercutio is good at sword fighting, he could also die in the process. Mercutio did die in the fight, and it was because he took a risk. Based on the article, “Beautiful Brains”, risk taking is a very common thing during the teenage years. According to the article it states, “Also peaking during adolescence is risk-taking (Dobbs 3).” Risk-taking is greatly seen in teenagers rather than adults.
