The Age of the New Women Throughout the years the perception of women has been changing constantly. Each year women get closer and closer to gaining equal rights. The 1920’s was huge in changing the way people see women. Women started to become more independent and not living under the impression that they have to be house6wives. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Firzgerald illustrates the new women of the 1920s and whose wealth and social class affects how they act as seen in the female characters in the novel. Myrtle Wilson is the wife of Mr. Wilson and is also the mistress to Tom Buchanan. Myrtle does not come from money and is living out her fantasies of having money through Tom. Myrtle live in the Valley of the Ashes which is a worn down part of town in between East Egg and New York City. Myrtle is also the mistress of Tom Buchanan. Myrtle believes that she can do whatever she wants because she is Tom’s mistress but in one scene Myrtle talks about Daisy.” Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" shouted Mrs. Wilson. ‘I 'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai –– ‘Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand” (Fitzgerald 125). This event taught Myrtle that she could not do whatever she wanted to do. Daisy went through the relationship acting like she did not know that Tom was cheating on her. Towards the end of the novel Myrtle Wilson gets killed by Daisy. The only people who know that Daisy was the one who killed Myrtle are Daisy and Jay. People went through this time period thinking that money never ran out and that there is unlimited amount of money.
