The age of exploration was a period of time where Europeans were searching for an ocean route to Asia. During this time, Spain and Portugal were two countries to claim New World colonies. They had the most impressive navies and they were also the closest European powers to the New World. Portugal colonized Brazil so Spain could not have it. It will take Portugal decade to finally colonize Brazil because it takes a large amount of money and they were in no financial state to colonize sooner.
