“And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” This quote from the bible shows that during the afterlife, Catholics believe that if people lived a well-behaved life, we will rest in peace in paradise which indicates Heaven. If not, they will end up in Hell. In Buddhism however, they believe in reincarnation. People will be reincarnated until they gain enlightenment. In Islam, the belief is somewhat the same as Catholicism, but will all be judged at the end of the world: Day of Judgement. It is a place where humans receive salvation and eventually go to Heaven. Salvation in Catholic teaching means “liberation from straitened circumstances or from other evils, and of a translation into a state of freedom and security.”
During purgatory, they endure severe punishments, but in the process are cleansed of their sins. They will eventually pass Purgatory and enter heaven, but the process involves a certain amount of time in purgatory which is an excruciating and tough experience. The certain amount time a person spends in Purgatory depends on how much their soul have been corrupted with sin. Those who are already too corrupted with sin and was disobedient to God, they end up in Hell.
Hell is for the people who have had their souls too corrupted with sin and continued to disobey God until death. It is also for those who cannot be cleansed in the fires of purgatory and also those who wanted to go to Hell. It is an eternity spent with Satan and his demons. They show no mercy. Everybody is tormented, tortured, and it is unending. It is a state where people are completely isolated from the goodness of God. Today, theologians say that the suffering in Hell is more the soul, rather than physical terms.
