The Affair that Started it All The Crucible by Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, 1962. This little Puritan village has more problems and conflicts than even the most populated of cities. One of these problems is the affair between Abigail Williams and John Proctor. This one little event spawns a wave of chaos and destruction. The affair is easily the most significant conflict in The Crucible for three reasons. It causes the girls to dance with Tituba, John's guilt, and Abigail's envy. These events are the precursor to the entire witch trials epidemic and the deaths of many people. The affair between John and Abigail was significant to the plot because it caused Abigail and the girls to dance in the woods with Tituba. The
