In 2013 the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights passed a resolution 23/13 which reinforced that “state would adopt specific measures to protect and preserve the rights to life and security of people with albinism, as well as their right not to be subject to torture and ill treatment, and ensure their access to adequate health care, employment, education and justice”. Under this resolution Tanzania, with the largest populations of persons with albinism in the world, has created special protection centres to protect individuals with albinism from violence. NGOs such as Under the Same Sun and AIPC Pandora have also become involved by providing sun protection creams, sunglasses, and UV advice to those with albinism. While people with albinism still have obstacles to face, they have been improving slowly and will hopefully be further helped by our Advisory Panel.
Possible Solutions:
Increasing international research to identify bottlenecks that prevent individuals with albinism to achieve in education or employment standings.
Work towards ensuring that individuals with similar disabilities receive the attention that is required by their illnesses.
Creation of programs as to remove the current stigma that remains a significant barrier for albino individuals.
