Risks Taken by Becky Thatcher
The book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain conveys the concept of Risk vs. Reward very well. A risk is a choice made involving either a reward or consequence. A reward is the outcome that involves earning something you felt was necessary to expose yourself to possil danger for. A consequence is a dreadful result that occurred from a deteriorated risk. Becky Thatcher from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, conducts many risks throughout the book. She is a young girl who is the love interest of Tom Sawyer. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and is proud, jealous, and appreciative of Tom's devotion. A risk taken by Becky was when she purposely tried to make Tom jealous. “She was sitting cozily on a little bench behind the schoolhouse looking at a picture book with ALfred Temple- and so absorbed were they, and their heads so close together over the book, that they did not seem to be conscious of anything else in the world besides” (Twain 117) Becky did not care for Alfred, she was only trying to make Tom jealous. We’re lost! We can never get out of this awful place! Oh, why did we ever leave the others!” (Twain 186). After they realized they were lost, Becky was panicking and contemplating how they would never find their way back. “She sank to the ground and burst into such a frenzy of crying that Tom was appalled with the idea that she might die, or lose her reason.” (Twain 187). Tom felt afraid inside, but on the outside, he was trying to act brave and fearless for Becky's sake. Becky took a risk of following Tom deeper into the cave away from the others. If Becky had not followed Tom, she would not be lost, but she would also be without Tom. After they were stuck in the cave for a long time, they grew an attachment together that was not there
