The Grapes of Wrath, The Scarlet Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and To Kill a Mockingbird. These are just some of the books that have been banned in certain schools, bookstores and libraries. The Grapes of Wrath because of profanity and sexual references. The Scarlet Letter because it is pornographic and obscene. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because it is oppressive and racially insensitive. And To Kill a Mockingbird because it is degrading and racist. All of these books have shaped America and the world. Yet, the true meaning behind them have been overlooked by parents, administrators and sometimes even students. We need to realize that it is time to stand up and unban the books that are teaching us the history of the world. This situation is relevant to all of us because we are currently high school and college students who have learned about these books and learned from them. …show more content…
This is usually done to protect others- mostly children- from reading difficult ideas and information. Sex, racism, religion and language are the main reasons why books are banned. Banned Books Week states that “Many books have been banned or censored in one or more of these categories due to a misjudgment or misunderstanding about the book's contents and message.” People are looking past the true meaning and, instead, are misunderstanding that these books are teaching people a lot more than just racism, sex, religion and language. Which can also lead to people banning books that they haven’t even read. In a video posted by Arizona State University, James Blasingame states that “I have been to many book challenges where parents or a parent group or someone who was on a campaign across the nation stopped in to say “We’ve got to get this book out of the curriculum” only to find out they hadn’t even read

James Howe, the author of The Misfits, is in support of the allowance of books: “Banning books is just another form of bullying. It’s all about fear and an assumption of power.” James elaborates that banning books is a different articulation of bullying. The definition of bullying and censorship do not differentiate abundantly. Bullying is using superior strengths to use force upon someone for their struggle of power.…

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn shouldn't be banned, but should be taught in schools because it gives the students a perspective of what it was really like in that time period, the way the people lived, and their morals, despite the use of the N-word and other racial slurs. Over the years, the meaning of words change, causing what…

The banning and challenging of a book is typically decided by parents, school staff, and district officials. For a book to be challenged it has to be attempted to be removed or restricted. It is, again, based upon the objections or parents and school officials. Unlike a challenge a banning of a book is the removal of material that is getting challenged. Most of the time challenges and banning’s are motivated by the desire to protect the children from what people think may be inappropriate content, typically sexual or against a religion or sometimes because it promotes a certain religion.…

There has been a request from several people to remove books from the curriculum such as Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye due to some inappropriate language. Although I am aware that foul language is not acceptable inside the walls of high schools, I cannot assist with that decision. Many people out in the real world use that language on TV shows and movies, social media, with friends and family, and definitely in numerous books! A couple of books with a few choice words should not harm anyone. Most likely, the high school students will already recognize all of them.…

“Once again, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is under siege from irate parents who, focused on a word rather than the book as a whole, want it removed from the regular curriculum” (Balee 15). Balee expresses the ongoing debate whether The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be banned from school’s reading lists because of the explicit language and stereotypical portrayals of African Americans. This debate dates back to the 50s when desegregated schools across the nation started reading Mark Twain’s, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Soon after, public objections of requiring students to read this novel increased due to the racial epithets and racism; these objections still remain today.…

Educators teach about the 1930’s and students learn about it, and those books aren’t banned, and they teach similar things, but word them in a more pleasant way. Students read many books in school regarding the time period of the 1930’s, but To Kill A Mockingbird isn’t okay for children to read because of the language, which again has many resolutions. It is a very informative book about the conditions of the 1930’s, and how bad racism really was, compared to now. This book can show the people of this century what discrimination really was, and give them a perspective on how bad conditions truly were, so why is it still being banned? Kids don’t notice the history and the insight that they can get from this book, and they are more concerned with the fact that the book has unpleasant topics.…

Some of the main reasons that factor the search for banning of books, according to Butler University’s Library Guides include, presence of opinions the seem to favor racism, encouragement of harmful living conditions, use of words like ‘Jesus’ as a curse word, presence of derogatory actions or images like in graphic novels, presence of unsuitable themes and also expression of contradicting view about religion, philosophies, and politics. In an article made public to raise awareness about the societal censorship, the author states: The books banned for their “immoral” content are the best to read since they speak of the aspects in humanity and highlight the errors in society. (2015) This leads us to question the true motive in trying to suppress the freedom of expression. Should the banning of books be considered as a move for the greater good or ignorance?…

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an example of a banned book due to racism. This is considered as a racist book because it’s said that Mark Twain uses the “N” word and this is considered a controversial word in the English language. Also some other books are banned because of this same cause because they show “white superiority” according to them. I believe some books that contain racist remarks, are not meant in any bad way, but people might get offended. But I believe that overall they are books that show a little bit of history, such as how people were before.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
