Children are taught or learn morals and values from their parents and significant others in their lives. They can be influenced by them negatively and positively depending on the example they set. The other side to that is that people are also individuals. They grow up and make decisions of their own free will. They use their own experiences in life to determine right from wrong as well as develop their own identity around what they see and have been taught. An uneducated father, who was an alcoholic and did not work, raised Huckleberry Finn. He and was unable to provide adequate food or shelter for his son. He was also very abusive towards him. Deceit is used a lot throughout the book, Huck lied about his true identity he has also used deceit joking around trying to fool people. In some cases it may seem as though it is better to use deceit instead of being honest. There are always consequences when you don’t make the right choices. The king used deceit to get money from a group of church people. In this particular scene they have stopped in a city by the river and the king hears a preacher talking to the congregation the king, who is dressed in a pirate costume runs over to the platform where the preacher is and asks if he could speak to the people. He uses the costume to convince the people at the church revival that he is in need of money to help him and the other pirates to get to their destination. He starts telling the congregation, he had been robbed (148) and “he is a changed man now, and happy for the first time in his life; poor as he was, he was going to start off and work his way back to the Indian Ocean (148). ” He also stated, “and though it may take him along time to get there, without any money, he would get there anyway (148-149).” Because of this statement the preacher and congregation decided to take up a collection tot help the King. The king ended up collecting eighty-seven dollars and seventy-five cents from the revival. He deceived these people into thinking he was a pirate that needed money.
