The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn contains the word “nigger” over 210 times. Pap Finn is a racist “There was a free nigger there from Ohio-a mulatter, most as white as a white man. ” (Twain, 34) he goes on to say that on election day the free negro could vote. Pap was too drunk to vote but will never vote again because a colored man was allowed to vote. Pap believes that government is corrupt for letting a negro be free and vote. Huck is educated enough to read which his father hates “You’re educated, too, they say; can read and write.” “You think you 're better’n your father,now, don’t you, because he can’t?” “I’ll take it out of you.” Pap discourages going to school, education and does not want Huck to be smart and civilized. Another point made is what a fool Jim is made by Mark Twain. Jim exaggerates his stories and believe multiple superstitions. During Huck and Jim’s adventure Huck tries to explain to Jim about the bible and king Solomon but Jim think he has too many children and lacked value of life. This led to a conversation about frenchmen in which Jim did not understand why Frenchmen spoke French and not English. Huck explains “... [d]oes a cat talk like we do?” (Twain, 85) Jim replied no and Huck asked a “Cow” still the answer was no. The word “nigger” was the same as people today saying African American. the book itself is not racist but contains racist individuals. Pap, king, duke who are all racist and white trash who are frowned on by folks in the same cultures. In the end Huck is willing to give up all his morals based on society for a friend who is viewed a slave. Over the course of the the adventure Huck realizes that Jim is equal to himself and educated in the ways of the world. Opposers want to censor the book for schools but like Mark Twain once said “Censorship is telling a man he can 't have a steak just because a baby can 't chew it.” Not everyone will digest The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the exact same but should understand the American
