Twain trashes his novel with the last several chapters and many readers are angry with the end. Hill states “In fact, the status of the ending remains a topic of unresolved controversy today, and some adaptations of the novel solve the problem of the ending by rewriting it”. Many people wanted to change the ending and Hill also states “The most recent film version eliminates Tom Sawyer’s return and has Jim escape from a lynch mob”. This shows that people are not happy with the ending and wanted to change the last chapters. Many readers are disappointed by the novel and Hill states “Many readers have felt that these chapters constitute an anticlimactic letdown, even a betrayal, in which Twain lapses into trivial slapstick comedy and thus loses sight of the heroic moral theme he has developed up to this point--Jim’s struggle for freedom from slavery”. Twain lets many readers down and many are angry for having read the whole novel, and the novel is ruined in the end. Hill says “In 1935 Ernest Hemingway… stated that ‘all modern American literature comes from’ Huckleberry Finn, while warning that ‘if you read [the novel] you must stop where the nigger Jim is stolen from the boys. This is the real end. The rest is cheating”. The “real” ending is way before the huge let down, and Hemingway suggests to stop there. Many find the ending a waste of time …show more content…
Other readers think Twain is a wonderful writer and knows how to write a novel properly. The scholar T.S. Eliot says “ I do not suggest that it is his only book of permanent interest; but it is the only in which his genius is completely realized”. Eliot is saying that in this novel he is a genius but, many readers disagree; the readers think he doesn’t know how to be an author. Hill uses Lionel Trilling, and says “Twain uses the device of Tom Sawyer’s return so that Huck may quite appropriately move away from center-stage and over to the wings where he is more comfortable”. This novel is about Huck, so why should he move to the wings and let Tom take over centerstage. It should not be Tom taking over, it should be on Huck who was comfortable the whole novel. Hill also uses Eliot to say “It is right that the mode of the end of the book should bring us back to that of the beginning”. When writing, if a character is growing as a person, why would you relapse and return to your old self. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an amazing novel that many students should read, however, outside of the classroom because when you over-analyze the novel, it will be difficult and a letdown; Twain uses the end, the return of Tom which affects Jim and Huck, and the language to destroy the novel. This novel is wonderful but should not be over-analyzed. Readers who over-analyze the novel ruin the ending.
