The Adventurer and the Shrew
William Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew has a variety of different relationships throughout the play. Katherine is known as the shrew, and Petruchio who is known as a gentleman of Verona are the two main characters in this play. These two characters end up falling in love with each other by the end of the play, but they had to go through many scenes to do so. In the begging of the play they seem to be hateful to one another, but by the end of the play there marriage seems to grow into something wonderful. As I comparing their relationship from the beginning to the end of the play there are many changes that take place that actually change their whole relationship in general. Throughout many scenes Katherine

She does so by placing her hand under his foot, which represents a sign of respect. Petruchio shows respect back by allowing her to do so, even though he could have kicked her hand away instead. Her speech declared that women should listen to their husbands. She states that “thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign; thy one that cares for thy”. She also says, “Even such a woman oweth to her husband; And when she is forward peevish, sullen, sour, And not obedient to his honest will, And not obedient to his honest will, What is she but a foul contending rebel And gracless traitor to her loving lord? What is she but a foul contending rebel?” This speech shows that by this time in the story Katherine and Petruchio could have actually been in love. In the begging of the play Petruchio and Kate do not seem to truly love one another and are constantly fighting; however, towards the end their love seems to finally become real. Katherine never respected her husband or their marriage until the middle and end of the play and showed civility by her speech. Kate even says, “My heartas great, my reason haply more.” This statement just shows how Katherine’s heart has changed for Petruchio by this time in the play. The adventurer and the shrew were truly in

The Taming of the Shrew does not present major events such as Petruchio and Katherine's wedding or their travels home to Petruchio's estates. Characters fill in the missing events by relaying this information to each other through conversation. Before this happens, however, the audience members gain an element of mystery as well as humor as they try to imagine how the scene would have played out. Shakespeare intends for the audience members to find amusement as they imagine the scene in their own way. The absence of important events in the play brings humor and…

Subsequently, the inequalities between the genders are evident in the master plan Petruchio uses to change Katherine from a “bad girl” to a “good girl” because it depicts the extent to which patriarchal men would go to ensure their dominance over women. According to feminist theory, women who follow patriarchal standards are called “good girls” and they “are put on pedestals and idealized as pure, angelic creatures whose sense of self consists mainly or entirely of their usefulness to their husbands” (Tyson 87). Since Katherine does not follow this definition, Petruchio takes it upon himself to change her. In other words, as Critic Marianne L. Novy states, “The way [Petruchio] talks about society proves him independent of its actual judgments and ready to reverse its expectations…

Throughout time, the moral standards and values of society and its members greatly changes, this in turn tremendously affects the perception of the actions performed by those in the past. Specifically in the perception of literature, the perspective in which it is viewed significantly influences how people understand them. If we look at literature written in the past through a modern lens while applying modern standards and values to it, much of the subject’s essence is lost in that translation because their is no attempt to understand what the writing meant when it was written, nor an effort to try and dig deeper for analysis of the writing. This is the cause of debate of the role that sexism plays in William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.…

Eric Minton’s thesis is accurate in his essay “Who is the Misogynist Monster: Petruchio, Shakespeare, or You?” because it mentions Taming of the Shrew as not being misogynist, and Petruchio and Kate having a stable relationship. Minton indicates that the play is not misogynist because of how Kate is able to be assertive and insulting. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine says, “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (II.i.208). Katherine is insulting Petruchio in this scene and shows how Shakespeare did not play her as a damsel in distress but as a strong, independent woman.…

In Shakespeare's work and Heath Ledger’s video, they of both works had the same tone because they both followed the same story line, so there were a lot of parts where Petrico would mess with Kate and she would do the same back, but in the movie, Patrick was more sweet and playful overall. This was depicted well in both works and it showed that the two were falling for one another. The filmmaker did really well at modernizing Taming of the Shrew into a work that is easily understood by the viewer. Without these modernized plays, Taming of the Shrew would be left behind and there would not have been such a strong meaning of true love in this work. The filmmaker made it possible for this story to be understood easily and also made it enjoyable to watch.…
