William Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew has a variety of different relationships throughout the play. Katherine is known as the shrew, and Petruchio who is known as a gentleman of Verona are the two main characters in this play. These two characters end up falling in love with each other by the end of the play, but they had to go through many scenes to do so. In the begging of the play they seem to be hateful to one another, but by the end of the play there marriage seems to grow into something wonderful. She does so by placing her hand under his foot, which represents a sign of respect. Petruchio shows respect back by allowing her to do so, even though he could have kicked her hand away instead. Her speech declared that women should listen to their husbands. She states that “thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign; thy one that cares for thy”. She also says, “Even such a woman oweth to her husband; And when she is forward peevish, sullen, sour, And not obedient to his honest will, And not obedient to his honest will, What is she but a foul contending rebel And gracless traitor to her loving lord? What is she but a foul contending rebel?” This speech shows that by this time in the story Katherine and Petruchio could have actually been in love. In the begging of the play Petruchio and Kate do not seem to truly love one another and are constantly fighting; however, towards the end their love seems to finally become real. Katherine never respected her husband or their marriage until the middle and end of the play and showed civility by her speech. Kate even says, “My heartas great, my reason haply more.” This statement just shows how Katherine’s heart has changed for Petruchio by this time in the play. The adventurer and the shrew were truly in
