The advent of tissue culturing in the early 1900s has shaped modern science tremendously. Fields such as cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and many others are heavily dependent on cell culturing to carry out experiments. Cell culturing initially began when pioneering scientists sought a way to study cells outside their tissue origin. They began with tissues and then later on, techniques were developed that enabled the study of individual cells in vitro that would give rise to animal cell culturing. In this summary of cell culturing, it is imperative to understand the history of cell culture and controversy associated with it, define what cell culture is, and explain key equipment and methods necessary to perform cell culturing to understand how critical it is to science.

Aseptic technique is highly encouraged to prevent catastrophic introduction of foreign particles or other cells into the cell culture. Contamination in cell culturing is divided into two categories. Chemical contamination refers to incorporation of the wrong medium, water, or other chemicals into the culture container. Biological contamination involves the addition of bacteria, fungi, viruses, other microorganisms and other cell lines into the correct cell line being cultured. Due to the prevalence of contamination, much emphasis is placed on sanitation of media, reagents, working space, instruments and other necessary items needed to carry out culturing. It is standard that work done in the laminar flow hood should be completed in one sitting as quickly as possible by one person. Only one cell line should be handled at a time to reduce the risk of culture
