Photography started with a camera, the basic idea that a moment in the physical life could be accurately captured and placed upon a sheet. The first camera invented was made by Alexander Wolcott. His camera was patented on May 8, 1840. Alexander Wolcott’s invention made it possible for candid photos to be taken and not fade away with time (Gerber, 2015). Previously, many had attempted to develop machines that captured life but these developments were less advanced. Over time, the camera developed in many ways shapes and forms technologically. In 1885, Kodak developed paper film, which revolutionized the photography business (Gerber, 2015). Through photography the reality of these events was revealed resulting in success and loss. Many individuals, such as Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Matthew Brady, Barack Obama, and Robert Capa impacted society and they owe part of their success to photography. Abraham Lincoln credited the success of his presidential election to his photograph, which was widely distributed (Urtron, 2013). Other individuals including presidents, famous performers, and presently people around the world can owe some of their success to photography or photojournalism because it showcases who we especially because it is now circulated in mass media. Since the use of photography events throughout history were witnessed almost virtually. Politics, wars, and discoveries, usually hidden events were exploited. The civil war was one of the most impacted events in history affected by photography. Matthew Brady is known for his portraits of Civil War generals and for his images of vast fields littered with the corpses in the aftermath of battle. Much of our time is now consumed with celebrating, sharing, and relating images. The invention of the camera revolutionized the past and still today revolutionizes our future. Photography benefits society in so many ways. With the combination of media and photography people are not only becoming more corrupt but they are being exploited for who they truly are. Photography is now used in every thing society does, people need to use it in the right way because with the proper use of it humanity can benefit colossally from it.
