Phone checking can become a behavioral addiction, which cues into the dopamine circuits in our brains. Left unchecked, the behavior can lead to challenges in face to face relationships and, in addition to the stress of being "always on," can be a problem in that it takes away from time necessary to be present for in person connection, which we all need for social health. Solutions include boundary setting, mindfulness practices and building the capacity of the prefrontal cortex to engage and intervene, interrupting the cycle of constant checking and soothing the accompanying hypervigilence. It may also be necessary to look at underlying emotions, as any addiction can be a form of avoiding the discomfort of challenging emotional states.…

Reading the article “The Eternal Umbilicus” by Hara Estroff Marano, I have to say that I agree with most of the topics that were stated in the article such as, cellphones making us more dependent on our parents and preventing us from solving our own problems. These activities or consumptions may be pleasurable, but the continuous use or action eventually interferes with the activities of daily living, and with the responsibilities of the individual, such as relationships, academic or professional life, or health. The individual who suffers from an addiction may not be aware of the compulsive and addictive behavior, and how it is causing problems to him and others. While the term addiction usually refers to physical addiction, that is, the biological state in which the body becomes accustomed to the presence of a substance, there are also addictions which can be psychological in nature. An individual is said to have developed tolerance to a substance in those cases of physical additions where the body adapts to the substance to a point it no longer has the same effect it originally had. Nonetheless, most of the time addictive behavior has no relation to a physical tolerance, but rather a psychological source.…
