Wild, by Cheryl Strayed is an autobiographical book about her self-discovery and journey on the Pacific Crest Trail after her mother died. Many times within the book, Cheryl acted irrationally and or on a whim. She put herself in dangerous situations and dealt with fear and stress. Although some of Cheryl’s actions, such as using heroin and becoming pregnant, going on the Pacific Crest Trail, and divorcing her husband seem irrational, Cheryl’s actions are quite reasonable from her point of view.
One of Cheryl’s most irrational acts was that she used heroin and became pregnant. Heroin is one of the most addicting and dangerous drugs in the world and having a baby while on heroin could have lead to a myriad of problems for both Cheryl and her baby. Even though her actions seemed illogical, they were understandable because Cheryl used heroin and sex in order to numb the pain she felt because of the death of her mother. The reason that Cheryl did this was so she could be reborn from the person she was in her past. Cheryl writes, “There was no question that if I divorced Paul, I’d choose a new name for myself.” (Strayed 96) By renaming herself, Cheryl was able to assume a new identity, one without the baggage from her past. She also divorced her husband, Paul, so she could get over her mother’s death. Many times within the book, Cheryl states that in order to forgive herself and heal, she must be alone. Lastly, Cheryl writes in Wild about how she married Paul to young. Even though they were good friends, their marriage just was not working for Cheryl any more.
