Into The Chaos A serial killer can be defined as someone who kills three or more people over more than a month (7). The actions and backgrounds of serial killers are closely studied for many reasons such as criminal investigations. These people kill without remorse and never stop until the law takes action on them. Every action they do is closely studied to find familiarities and predict their actions. Every serial killers life tells a story that reveals more information to investigators about their mental processes (“Psychological Profile”). The Federal Bureau of Investigations spends a lot of time gathering their data to build these comprehensive profiles. This data consists of their victims traits, their personal traits, and their crime scenes. It is all very important in catching the offender. This is also where they discover if the killer is organized or disorganized. Serial killers who plan the location in order to hide the evidence are known as organized serial killers. The disorganized group are those who murder spontaneously and leave incriminating evidence. They look at a group of killers and study the recurrences in order to build a basic serial killer profile. There is three types of killing in these profiles. The first is mission killing which can usually only be related by the type of weapon they use. The visionary type ransacks the victims residence and scatters the victims clothing. The lust killings usually consisted of mutilating the victims body. Most likely the genitals. The last was thrill killing, which is feeling a need to kill. The difficulties come when there are both organized and disorganized killings. Such as one where the body was left behind as well as the weapon but all traces of the killer were concealed. The killers have noticeable changes over time. Semi-organized would gradually get more organized and the disorganized would move down in factors of one. They would change one thing about each crime scene in a disorganized fashion. If their first murder they cleaned the blood, they may evolve to where they are so disorganized that they do not. Further research in this field could result in catching the organized killers more effectively (“Serial Killers”). A profile of Ted Bundy was taken and the depth of the research is clearly shown. Ted was a killer who was very charismatic and could manipulate people easily with his charm. He went on to kill 30 people before he was sent to the electric chair for execution
