There are a variety of reasons an individual might choose to pass as another race or class. Many individuals choose to pass for economic security or even physical safety. Passing is an act that is often intentional or sometimes inadvertent. Some people choose to pass for a momentary event, while others make it a lifestyle choice. The act of passing may seem beneficial; however, it often leads to a barrier, a barrier of race, class and even family matters. Passing is no longer just African Americans pretending to be white. There are all different forms of passing that occur for a variety of reason. In our society, both men and women are expected to marry someone of the opposite sex, procreate and live a happy American life. But what if that is not what one desires? What if a man chooses to love a man or a woman choose to love a woman? What happens then? For many homosexuals, they water down these desires to simply please society. As unfair and sad as it is, they do not feel comfortable with whom they are simply because society disagrees. Individuals who are homosexuals might pretend to be straight for the sake of acceptance. Our current society, especially in the South, is extremely critical of anyone or anything that does not fit into their social norm. They do not like the idea of someone loving someone of the same sex. Homosexuals might pass as straight individual in order to simply prevent themselves from being physically harmed. Many see maintaining a straight appearance as essential for positions of power, or authority. They might also pass in order to keep people from judging them or making cruel

Mohr and Purdie-Vaughns (2015) relate this behavior to intersectional invisibility. The authors define it as the general failure of people to fully recognize individuals with intersecting identities as members of their constituent groups (Mohr & Purdie-Vaughns, 2015). In addition, the authors theorize that people who have multiple subordinate group identities such as African American women and African American gay persons are inclined to be labeled as non-prototypical members of each of the groups to which they belong (Mohr & Purdie-Vaughs, 2015).…

In David Leonhardt’s article “Is College Worth it? Clearly, New Data Say” and Chris Matthew’s article “Why College Isn’t for Everyone, Explained in a Single Chart”, they both expressed their opinions on college through specific evidence and statistics. Both authors discussed the pros and cons of the financial decision for college. I believe that college is a smart financial decision because having a four-year degree allows a person to do more with their life instead of those with a high school diploma. In Leonhart’s defense, he explains the statistical side of the argument.…

Being born in South Central Los Angeles, I was taught that homosexuality is wrong. In the predominately black community if anyone was gay, there were two options; one hide your identity so that you won’t be harassed, two you are open about your sexual identity, but face the risk of harassment from your local community members and be looked down upon. One of the reasons why people are pushed to be straight is that it’s essential to push young boys to become proper men for wives, due to the amount of black men incarcerated. With the lack of fathers in the household, sons developed feminine traits from their own mothers, which can lead them to be gay. Also boys fail to learn to respect women because they’re no fathers to properly discipline them.…

If you only ever see yourself in tragic stories, do you learn to expect sadness? If you only ever see people concealing pieces of themselves, do you learn to hide elements of yourself? Despite the changes that are occurring in American society concerning the acceptance of LGBTQ+ people our representation in the media is deeply problematic. One of the fundamental problems is that TV, like society, asks its LGBTQ people to cover. According to Kenji Yoshino the author of Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights, covering is "to tone down a disfavored identity to fit into the mainstream" (Yoshino 2006: ix).…

Passing and Privilege African Americans, in earlier history have passed for the more dominant “white” race. This avertible process in the United Sates happened when certain African American outward appearances gave no visible indication that he or she was of the “black” race and, therefore was able to pass as white in order to prevent the stigma linked with the discrimination that African Americans endured during this earlier time period. This was a dilemma that was filled with complexity because it forced these individuals to only be able to claim one of their racial identities and not the other, leaving them with a feeling of isolation and levels of confusion. People, who use what is known as Passing did so in order to be able to live a more privilege or less complicated way of life.…

Students are in families that are in poverty or are not in a good place financially tend to get lower SAT scores. The programs that truly impact your score are the expensive ones and based off of how much your family makes a year you might have an unfair advantage or disadvantage. An article published by The Washington Post proved that families who make under twenty thousand annually on average obtain a score within the thirteen hundreds while families who make over two hundred thousand a year on average score within the seventeen hundreds (goldfarb). Each family that makes more money than the other annually tends to score higher than the other. Some argue that the new SAT released has fixed all the problems of unfair biased and is a step…

The leveling of the playing field for those who do not have the advantages necessary to sail through college on their own is a central feature of the mobility pathway. Many students from disadvantaged backgrounds also fail to meet admission guidelines, due to poor academic preparation. Class-based affirmative action is one remedy; however, affirmative action policies, to the extent that they exist, have been mainly based on race (Armstrong and Hamilton, p17). Integration is often treated as assimilation into the dominant current of (privileged) student life. However, on many campuses this would require pulling less privileged students off the mobility pathway and onto the party pathway— defeating the whole purpose.…

Everything now a day is based off number, whether it’s ones SAT scores, standardized test scores, or most importantly, ones GPA. College students, and even High school strive to reach a perfect four point zero semesters, or even acquire high honor roll. Unfortunately, according to John Taylor Gatto, and his article “Against School”, achieving that perfect semester, or making high honor roll, doesn’t always translate to receiving a honest education, but rather just schooling. On the other hand, Kristina Rizga, the author of the article “Everything you’ve heard about failing school is wrong” paints the picture of a non-fictional, academically bright character that lacks when it comes to standardize testing. Using Gatto as a basis of comparison,…
