Analysis Of Bernard Roth's 'The Achievement Habit'

“The problem with reasons is that they’re just excuses prettied up” (Roth 39). Throughout life, many reasons are used as everyday excuses. In The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of Your Life, the title of chapter two is called “Reasons Are Bullshit.” Throughout this chapter, Roth mentions some stories and personal experiences to help back up his argument. Some people may argue that Bernard Roth’s claims are not very persuasive, but he clearly proves that reasons are bullshit by using rhetorical appeal, even though pathos is weaker than ethos and logos, To begin with, Roth is persuasive in chapter two by gaining credibility from many students because of his use in ethos. People should not be afraid to tell others their opinions because it will build their honesty, make them seem more educated, and some people like the input. Calling someone out on their reasons will help build honesty, especially if the persons’ reason is complete bullshit. Building honesty will make them seem like a trustworthy person. When calling someone out on their reasoning, it may help the person seem more educated. If that person can help who they are calling out, it might help them eliminate their excuse. After all, some people like the input that others have to give. It might help them with whatever excuse they are trying to use and it will solve their problem. Calling someone out on their reasons will not always make them an unlikable person. A lot of people appreciate those that give their honest opinion, even when it is not
