In the book, “The Achievement Habit” by Bernard Roth, explains many valid reasons as to why things happen, how one could react to a situation, to not make an excuse to get by, and to prioritize. In the first chapter, “Nothing is what you think it is” has many different ways to go about things in life. The meaning of being successful, how to control what happens and how to react to it, playing the game of right and wrong, etc. Followed by chapter two, “Reasons are Bullshit” which explains how human beings create all these excuses to explain why people are late, why they do not do an assignment, etc. Roth writes about his personal experiences to make all understand as to why he began to changing his perspectives about the negatives into positives, …show more content…
What Bernard Roth is trying to get across to the audience is, to open up their mind in a way that makes them happier. Not to necessarily observe everything they see, but to analyze themselves and indicated actions. For example, “People are always changing and evolving for both good and bad, and we are all capable of reinvention” (Roth 18), As one gets older, people tend to figure out that human beings are constantly changing throughout the day, everyday; whether it be personalities or how they dress... Another example, “Nothing is what you think it is. You give everything its meaning”( Roth 18). In this quote, Roth is explaining the way you think of things, is the way you will perceive them. When the audience is reading this book, they find a feeling of comfort because they are intrigued to find what the next chapter holds. His intellectual statements such as, “Once you understand that you can choose what meaning and importance to place on something, you can also understand that it is you, not external circumstances, who enter mine the quality of your life” (Roth 20) proves his understanding of importance and prioritization. What is intriguing about this quote is that Roth is explaining how an individual can change the quality of life by understanding what is significant in …show more content…
In chapter one, he explains how he was out in the field for an experiment, and he recorded some evidence to help his research. When some other workers asked to borrow his tape, they took it to the back room and did not give it back to Roth. Roth finally realized that those workers were copying his tape to take credit for the brilliant captures; they betrayed Roth. What Roth got out of that situation is, “I cannot control what the outside world does, I can determine my own experience” (Roth 22). He told this story because it shows that it was just a tape, it is not his entire life, so why be should he stay mad about it? Roth said, “They should 've asked, and they didn’t. Big deal. Why was I about to let this ruin my night? One I cleared my head, I returned to the hotel and ended up having a wonderful time at the banquet that evening” (Roth 22). This also shows that you should not let one little thing ruin your day, or let it sit in your head thinking why someone did this. It happened; it is in the past, now move on because you can not do anything about

My Thoughts: To me, it seems like Nietzsche is saying here that the fact that most of us would not be content to relive our lives exactly as they are, over and over, should clue us in that we need to change our behavior. Maybe the very consideration of whether or not we’d be content to experience things exactly the same way again could help us to act in ways that make us more “benevolent toward life.” My Thoughts: This passage confused me a little bit. I can understand the suffering by those who have an “impoverished life,” but I’m not sure what Nietzsche means when he says that some people suffer from the “over-fullness of life” and seek terrible sights and deeds.…

Both short-term goals and long-term goals are important in life to become successful. I have set certain goals I would like to accomplish in my lifetime; some of these goals are personal while others are professional. A few of my professional goals for the future are to finish my Bachelor’s degree in nursing, find a nursing job in an ambulatory surgery unit, and eventually, apply for a Master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner.…

The author interrupts this dream-like scene as Perry broaches the subject of the murders yet again. Immediately, Capote begins to reveal the true superficiality of Dick’s personality through uses of syntax and diction. Perry starts by explaining that there “must be something wrong” for the two of them to “do what they did”, and Dick responds with, “Did what?”(29). Though the reply may seem simple and insignificant, that is exactly the reason it is important. Capote utilizes short and abrupt sentences in order to further portray Dick as a two dimensional character.…

When any person asks what is the good life, their answers have one similar aspect. The good life is something they want, and don’t have. Regardless of the commodities they have, there is always something they are without. Humans yearn for what they lack, and believe in winning it will give them satisfaction. Roth’s satire on the notion of the good life is it’s all about finding a way to win.…

Reasons are B.S. Bernard Roth is a man who has lived life to the fullest. He’s a well-respected professor at the Stanford D School and is a coveted speaker at conventions nationwide. He is a man of very strong principle, and he explains some of his values in his book, The Achievement Habit. Roth believes “Reasons are B.S.”, so much so that he made it the title of the second chapter of his book. Although I don’t completely agree with him, Roth’s use of Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle; ethos, pathos, and logos, clearly explains why he believes Reasons are B.S. Ethos is the ability of the author to convey their credibility and make the reader trust the information, and Roth is a master of it. Roth tells a story in the beginning of chapter…

“The problem with reasons is that they’re just excuses prettied up” (Roth 39). Throughout life, many reasons are used as everyday excuses. In The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of Your Life, the title of chapter two is called “Reasons Are Bullshit.” Throughout this chapter, Roth mentions some stories and personal experiences to help back up his argument. Some people may argue that Bernard Roth’s claims are not very persuasive, but he clearly proves that reasons are bullshit by using rhetorical appeal, even though pathos is weaker than ethos and logos, To begin with, Roth is persuasive in chapter two by gaining credibility from many students because of his use in ethos. Roth says, “I get a lot of requests from students around the world who want to join my research group…
