Most of the lower educated parents are African American and education might not be the primary problem for them; it might be food and a house for their families to stay in. They are role models to their children and children look to be like their parents, if nobody tells them to be better than or more than what their parents have done. Living in poverty and not having parents who focus on maintaining good grades, they lack a sense of motivation and knowledge on colleges and secondary schooling. According to Perry, “Among low-income students, college readiness dropped to just 11 percent...determined that it was poverty...” (1). The poverty that these students live in is affecting their scores and how prepared there are for school. The argument of this paper says the achievement gap will never fully be closed or slowed down to a moderate rate. The factors of the achievement gap have been going on too long to be stopped.
