The Achievement Gap And The Discipline Gap Summary

The lack of education is impacting crime rates. In the article The Achievement Gap and the Discipline Gap by Anne Gregory, she describes how unfair punishment in school leads to adolescents giving up and causing crime. Also in the article Testing Social Disorganization Theory by Taner Cam, he describes how dropout rates lead to crime too, due to their opportunities being shortened. Lastly, in the article Substance Involvement and the Trajectory of Criminal Offending in Young Males by John Welte, he describes how uneducated people lead to an increase of crime as well, since their maturity level is not up to standards. The effect of unfair punishment leads to dropout rates to increase and results in uneducated people committing crimes. By law the punishment shall fit the crime, but Gregory describes how unfair punishment is happening to minorities. The schools discipline practice is causing a racial gap in academic performance of adolescents. Minorities are more likely to be punished with a suspension, which might result in three grade level behinds. The racial gap is occurring due to the staff not having compassion for every student, despite their social standard. They are given less job opportunities as well as having a difficult time keeping their job. As a result of dropping out of school they are vulnerable to lower wages too, which effects their financial stability to own a house or car. Without the money to afford a comfortable life, dropouts tend to live in poverty. They are less likely to be married or have children, but if they end up having a family they are more likely to receive public assistance.
