Walking seems like an easy task, but in Kathy’s situation, it’s the very opposite. As she walks through the grass to the car, she loses her balance and topples to the ground. To some it is funny, to others it is embarrassing, to Kathy it is an everyday possibility. This is just one example of what her challenge has limited her from doing. Kathy Shilt is 73 years old and was born on December 7, 1944. Her birthday marks the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, just three years later than that fateful event. She lives in West Unity, Ohio with her husband Roger and her two dogs, Max and Molly. Kathy has two children and is the proud grandmother of four grandchildren. None of her toes will bend the right way or at all. The surgery also shortened her toes, and now she only wears size six. Kathy even has trouble buying shoes that fit her. Not only have her feet shortened, but they have also grown wider. Kathy remembers a time when she couldn’t buy a shoe in girls’ sizes because they wouldn’t fit right. She went to the boy's department and ended up buying a pair with a Disney character design. This is only one limitation that Kathy faces. The surgery’s results have slowed Kathy down, and walking has become an everyday challenge. In her opinion, she doesn’t walk near enough for her health, but still tries to get as much exercise as she can. She still goes to the Y, but cannot jump rope anymore. Likewise, Kathy cannot wear high heels because her toes won’t ever bend the way they need to.
