Like many other colleges, Austin Community College has reasonable rules, policies, and procedures which students and faculty must abide by. However there is one policy I feel should be completely revised or discarded. ACC requires students who did not score high enough on the Mathematics and English sections of the SAT or TAKS test to either enroll in a remedial course or to take the TSI placement exam and test into a college-level course. The issue that concerns me is there are students who have credibility from their high school career, such as high GPAs and advanced course credits that proves they have the ability to learn and do well in college-level courses. One of the most substantial issues is when the student is required to pay for remedial classes which offer zero credit hours. College tuition these days isn’t considered to be “affordable” anymore; it’s not uncommon for students to start at smaller community colleges for the sole purpose of saving money. This new requirement presents a financial burden to students who are already overburdened with student …show more content…
No student who can provide a high school transcript with a high GPA especially in classes that they are now having to enroll in at a remedial level, be overlooked because of a policy which only acknowledges test scores. In this day and age students attend community colleges such as ACC because these educational institutions accept students with any level of intelligence, and it saves them money, as compared to starting as a freshman at a four year university. It allows students to earn transferable credits as soon as possible in order to transfer to a four-year school. Unfortunately, these pros become slightly hypocritical when this policy is in
