The theme of the book is to never settle for what is expected. Arnold is an Indian who lives on a reservation in Washington. People on the rez never try to get out of the rez and be successful in life. They settle for what is given in the rez because they believe they cannot do what they want to do because of their financial situation, and because they have nobody to support them. Arnold however wants to do something with his life.

This enraged him because Arnold wanted a better education. This led to him wanting to transfer to Reardan so he can get a better education so he can leave the rez. On the rez, alcohol is the biggest evil. Alcohol got his grandmother killed, and his dad's best friends Eugene killed. Arnold wants to get out of the rez so he can be successful in life and prove all of his doubters wrong. “I have to go. If I don’t I am going to die here”. This quote shows that Arnold does not want to settle because he wants to leave the rez and do something with his life.
