Arnold and Rowdy both live on a reservation where people are going through hard times. Arnold wanted to go to a school that wasn’t on a reservation and Rowdy felt as if Arnold was leaving his home and didn’t want to be friends with Rowdy. This is when their friendship went downhill. Rowdy could sometimes be mean, but he always protects those who are the closest to him. Rowdy is a good friend because he protects Junior and he tells the truth when it's painful.

In the short story “Average Waves In Unprotected Waters”, man versus self is definitely the main source of conflict. Man versus self is described as an internal struggle between the person and their inner self. Bet’s decision to take Arnold to the institution verses not to, is quite possibly one of the hardest decisions for Bet in the story. It seems that Bet contemplates whether or not she made the right decision to have him placed in the institution weighed heavily on her . Proof of this is how she reacts and flips constantly between the two choices making it very clear she that she is having an internal struggle with herself.…

Whenever Arnold was being bullied and being made fun of, Rowdy would go back and do the same thing back to the kids that bully Arnold and make fun of him. He would protect him like a little brother from danger and anyone else that tries to harm Arnold. Just like in the book when Arnold was being bullied by the Andruss brother, Rowdy was so mad that he says to Arnold, “I’m going to kill those bastard, said Rowdy” (p.23). Rowdy was so mad that he was willing to do such harm to the Andruss brother just to protect Arnold from them again. Another example that shows how Rowdy would protect Arnold from harm was during the Spokane Tribe Powwow celebration and Arnold was to scare to go because he fear that he might end up getting beat up.…

They did not leave Will alone to solve his problem with the other boy instead they stayed next to him. I think that part of the movie showed that friends support you in the good as well as in the bad moments. On the other hand, there were some aspects that the movie missed such as similar professional interest.…

At least once in your life you have probably heard something along the lines of, “stand up for what you believe in even if you are standing alone,” or, “do what is right, even if you are doing it alone.” It is common advice given, but not as common followed. Many people choose to side with whatever most people are siding with, often because they are scared to do it alone or draw attention. As shown in both “In the Silence” by Peggy S. Curry and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, characters are brave because they stand up for both themselves and what they believe in, even when standing alone. First, in “In the Silence”, Jimmy takes a stand, talking back to Angus Duncan.…

Sherman Alexie’s, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian” is the account of Arnold Spirit, also known as Junior. Junior is the novel’s narrator and while he is witty and seemingly proud of his heritage in the beginning of the story, it appears the point of the novel is to show us Junior’s transformation. He begins life on the reservation, attending school in Wellpinit, Washington. Eventually, he transfers to an all-white high school twenty-two miles from the reservation in Reardan, where he begins to change. A shallow reader may think the novel is only about Junior’s journey, but actually, Alexie has managed to show us the difference between Arnold Spirit and Junior as two separate people.…

The song “I Got the Juice” by Dream Junkies in formatted by tricky wordplay and incredible use of these fire spitting rappers to convey a certain message. A message of hope and inspiration. One showing how these men who were lost have now found their own way and are running with it. Their way doesn’t exactly line up with what the culture today says about them but it shows how they have raised above the challenge of stereotypes and limits due to their race and social class and are now setting the way things work in the world. This reminds me of Arnold from the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian” by Sherman Alexie.…
