When Arnold’s grandmother dies all the students stop making fun of him. They feel bad for him because even though he is native American the students all know it sucks to lose a family member (161-162). Arnold had been missing a lot of school days after his grandma and sister died and when he came back the teacher called him out on it and when that happened all the kids in that class threw down their textbooks and walked out of the class to support Arnold (175). Arnold now realizes he is not an outcast anymore, he actually is being accepted by a group of people that he never thought he could fit into. For Arnold bullying really changes him. He is constantly dealing with people making fun of him on the reservation and at Rearden. Bullying gave Arnold the strength to overcome anyone and anything that is thrown his way. Without everything that happened to Arnold he wouldn’t be the same person he is now. If he had been born looking normal who knows if he would ever considered going to Rearden or if he would have just lived the rest of his life on the reservation like most people did.
