Marbled Headstone Analysis

The photograph of Patrick Joseph Donahue’s marbled, gray headstone was captured at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in the outskirts of Elwood, Illinois. His specific headstone stands beside and in front of other war veterans in the national cemetery as together they exemplify the dedication, impact, and commitment that these men and women display for the United States of America. The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery stands as home to nearly half a million veterans who served in wars present and past. Few of these many veterans can be seen behind the gravesite of the United States Marine Corps veteran. The dark shadow replicates the image of the veteran’s headstone as it is easily visible among the freshly trimmed, green grass. The shadow itself serves as a reminder to the viewers of the photograph that even though the veteran in the front of the photograph may not be able to see the other veterans standing behind him, they will always be there. Typically, most people who would view the photograph think of a cemetery as an eerie or depressing place, but in reality the patriotic colors combined with the sun shining off of Donahue’s grave truly make the setting beautiful. In Yusaf Komunyakaa’s poem “Facing It”, we are presented with a man, possibly the author himself, as the speaker. He is clearly a Vietnam War veteran and he is facing the wall of the 58,000 fallen American soldiers. We are able to conclude that he is a veteran, coming to pay tribute to his fellow soldiers, because he specifically mentions “I said I wouldn’t, dammit: No Tears” (Komunyakaa 2-4). The poem is made up of short, but precise and specifically chosen sentences that all help to paint a vivid picture of this man’s painful visit to the monument. The speaker uses concrete images to put us, his audience, directly there with him through phrases like, “My stone.…

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” I’m sure you have heard this phrase many times before. While words have a certain impact on one reading them, nothing other than seeing something with one’s own eyes compares to a picture. Susan Sontag’s essay “Regarding the Pain of others” goes over how images impact our understanding of events that take place throughout history. One great example she talks about is the images of the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So I choose an image of a similar background, the Bombings of Pearl Harbor.…

Until this essay, I did not realize the extent that this number affected my family, and how meaningful placing the wreath on the memorial would be. While seeking information for this paper, the personal connection I had to this tomb and the soldiers it honored increased tremendously because of one thing: a phone call with my great-uncle Paul Brackett. During the call, I asked him if he had any war stories about himself or my family to share with me, given that he had served in the army between the Korean and Vietnam Wars. I learned that I had many connections to family that had served in WW2.…
