Interpersonal Communication Vs Face To Face Interaction

College students walking through campus with headphones on, listening to their favorite artists, as well as, texting their best friend from back home. At least three out of five people were doing this. Face to face interaction is starting to disappear as our lives move on. All it is now is texting, Facetiming, and accessing social media. I agree with the statement in the prompt, "to an outsider, it looks as though interaction with strangers is less frequent in the hallways than it used to be". Today, there is less social contact in person because now you can text someone and know how they are doing. According to a researcher of a Penn State course, Tamyra Pierce states, "in 2002 only 10% of the world's population used cell phones and by 2005 …show more content…
There might be some downsides of communicating through text messages. For instance, it can affect someone's social and personal development. For example, a study done by Tamyra Pierce claims that "social skills and face to face interactions are damaged through impersonal communication because the individual is unable to express body language, tone, voice, touch, and facial expressions through text messages" (SiOWFA15). Even though it is better to communicate face to face, there may be some complications, or it might be difficult to see the person in person. For example, my grandfather was struggling and was starting to die very slowly. We were going to see him, but he lived in Arizona at the time. Also, my brother and I were in school, so we couldn't leave school immediately; we had to wait until school was out. During the last few months of school we talked to him on the phone, because it is better than not talking to him at all. It is very hard for someone to have a face to face interaction with someone if they are far away. Another example of distance is business-related. Say you are trying to sell a product to a company but you can't show them the product and talk to them in person about it. In this case, it would be necessary to use text messaging, Skype, or social media. I believe that we should only use technology if there is no physical existence between you and the person. People still find ways to communicate if it is face to face or through texting or social media. For many people the way to communicate with one another varies. It is important to interact with people in person because you can truly express yourself and you cannot avoid uncomfortable and undesired situations because you are not behind a screen. If you have physical access with the person you want to talk to then go communicate with them in person. However, if there is no physical existence then technological communication is better. There are many ways to communicate and connect with people whether it is face to face, texting, facetiming, or social media. Despite it not being the same as talking to someone in person, it is still effective to talk to someone through a

People have started to use email and text messaging (instant messaging as well) to contact each other rather than calling on the phone, or having an actual face to face meeting. Is it possible for people to feel more comfortable behind a screen than being seen in person? Sherry Turkle author of the essay “No Need to Call” answers that question by explaining “At the screen, you have a chance to write yourself into the person you want to be and to imagine others as you wish them to be…when you cultivate this sensibility, a telephone call can seem fearsome because it reveals too much” (Turkle 374). Behind a screen it is definitely easier to be yourself but through messaging it is a much better way to avoid awkward silence. Messaging gives you time to think and process what you’re going to say to a person, while avoiding saying something that is stupid or embarrassing.…

Starting around December of my senior year the thought of me going to college and leaving my friends and classmates I have been with since I was five became a reality. We were all applying and being accepted to schools all over the country and though it was an extremely exciting time for everyone, it was also sort of sad. We had been together for as long as we could remember and since I went to a small school, we all knew everything about each other and not only were we close with each other, we were close with each other’s family’s. Not only was the class all relatively close with each other, but we also had tight groups of friends. My close group of friends all chose schools around Maine and New Hampshire and though we are not too far from…

Bring involvement with one another is one thing but people can also want their independence. But then, the argument depicting that the social media undermines interpersonal relationship holds no water. If there is no face to face communication between people, it does not mean that communication will not take place. The platform that the social media provides is so wide to the extent people can even send video messages and even hold video conversations through social networks like Skype. It is important for individuals to always try to communicate with all devices available, and thus social media gives people the opportunity to remain in contact at all times (Jackson,…
