These advocates claim that since the fetus is dependent on the mother and the fetus cannot walk, talk, and defend itself, that it is not a living being. By making these claims, it is clear that none have actually read the definition of the word “life.” The definition to the word “life” according to the “Oxford English Dictionary” is “The condition that distinguishes animals, plants, and other organisms from inorganic or inanimate matter, characterized by continuous metabolic activity and the capacity for functions such as growth, development, reproduction, adaptation to the environment” (Oxford 2015). With this definition one might notice that a fetus has many of the qualities required to be living, such as, “metabolic activity and the capacity for growth, development” and “reproduction” (Oxford …show more content…
The connotation of this word has been lost over time; with the loss of connotation, people then do not quite come to realism with what is actually happening (killing a human being that cannot defend itself) when a woman gets an abortion. According to “The Oxford English Dictionary”, the word “abortion” is defined as “The expulsion or removal from the womb of a developing embryo or fetus, spec. (Med.) in the period before it is capable of independent survival” (Oxford 2015). The key words in this definition are “developing embryo” (Oxford 2015). When the government decided to make abortion legal, there is no denying that the congressmen who voted for this legislation knew that this would allow the legal killing of living beings. If people thought of the word as its defined rather than the euphemized version, then many people would be more likely to be sympathetic towards the abortion victims (embryos). Incorporating these definitions in this paper may seem to be attempting to persuade one that abortion should not be legal, but this is not the case. The definitions are included to convey that the word abortion means to kill, which defends the title of the paper from anyone who believes abortion is not
