Essay On The Abolitionist Movement

Prior to the late nineteenth century, America was the land of oppression for African slaves. If they were captured in Africa by white men, they would be sent to the New World to work as slaves for the rest of their lives. Slaves were a form of property, so their white masters could work them as hard as they pleased. Field slaves had to work the fields for as long as their masters desired and house slaves were on duty at all times (PBS). Many people noticed how horribly the slaves were being treated, and they started a crusade called The Abolitionist Movement. This movement’s main priority was to abolish slavery in the United States; however, this would not have been accomplished without a Civil War (Abolition Seminar). The Abolitionist movement was a key factor to the outbreak of the Civil War, which eventually led to the end of slavery in America.

The Abolitionists had to do something to stop the harsh treatment of the slaves, and they thought that if they convinced them to come to the Union, their lives would be better. They wanted liberty for everyone in the United States, and if the only way that was possible to happen was for the slaves to run away from their masters, they were prepared to help them.
This issue was a contributing factor to the Civil War because it was one of the factors that led to the separation of the states. The North and the South could not agree at all on what to do with the slaves. This was such a big issue because the slave owners in the South depended on the slaves to make their living. Therefore, the slaves were essential tools to surviving, and the people who resided there would do anything to keep slavery alive, even if that meant seceding from the
