The Abolitionists had to do something to stop the harsh treatment of the slaves, and they thought that if they convinced them to come to the Union, their lives would be better. They wanted liberty for everyone in the United States, and if the only way that was possible to happen was for the slaves to run away from their masters, they were prepared to help them.
This issue was a contributing factor to the Civil War because it was one of the factors that led to the separation of the states.
