Since the Missouri Compromise line prohibited some states to be free and some to not, the Kansas-Nebraska act was created to repeal the Missouri Compromise. The Kansas-Nebraska act allowed for states to choose to be Slave or Free states. Once the bill as passed, and event known as “Bleeding Kansas” occurred. “Bleeding Kansas is when multiple people settled into Kansas as soon as the bill was passed (for and against slavery) so that one side can get the most states into their union as possible. A person by the name of John Brown, who was against slavery, gathered 6 pro-slavery people, and killed 5 of them over the night. The bodies of the men were left to discourage the supporters of slavery. Since there were many states becoming Free and Slave states, it could bring confusion on who is a slave in what state, and who isn’t. Dred Scott was the major divisive court case after the death of Dred Scotts slave owner, and the slave owners wife and son trying to get Dred Scott as their slave again. Dred Scott was living in a Free State, but never got his citizenship, and therefor was considered as property. The court’s ruling was expressed in Document 7, which describes their reasoning for their ruling against Dred Scott.
