The A&P story will be analysis in cultural. The effects of a small conservative community with conservative views is invaded by swimsuits. This story was written during 1932, and people are viewed based on the appearance and status in the community. In fact, in the very first sentence Sammy says "in walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits." (Updike 259) It was quite an attention grabber and people just didn’t dress that way to go grocery shopping. However, Sammy notices Queenie is different from other girls in the town. He is almost lovesick by her "sweet broad soft-looking can." (Updike 259) The way Sammy describes the girls he seems to judge them based on their appearances. This story portray Sammy’s coming of age. Sammy decide to stand up against conventional morality which is a defining moment in his life. When Sammy said, “I quit.” (Updike 265) Reader might think of him as a hero, but at the end he’s afraid this will give him a bad reputation in the community and hurt his chances of getting ahead in life. The literary device of A&P was narrated by Sammy, a 19 year old cashier at the store. This is a first person narrators, it seems to the reader that Sammy is telling the truth as he see it, but he’s unreliable because his point of view is limited. The theme or symbol in the story is the power of desire. This is apparent when Queenie was checking out and Sammy, “wonder where the money’s coming from. Still with that prim look she lifts a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her pink top.” (Updike 264) As one might compare the present time with the 1932’s, this humiliation and beliefs of the people than would be considered ancient. Today, there are chain grocery stores are now a fixture of American life. In the 2000s we have 24-hour stores, self-checkouts, and vast arrays of basic and specialty items.
