The 90/10 Grading System

There is a student Emma, who has recently graduated from Austin High School, where 90/10 grading system is used; 90% of Emma’s grades are knowledge based with scores such as tests and projects, while her practice work such as homework is worth 10% of her grade. Emma, naturally found school somewhat easy and because homework was only 10% of her grade, she often did not bother to do her practice work. Although she did not do her homework through high school, Emma managed to keep above a 3.00 GPA because practice work was worth so little. When Emma enters college, she is shocked to see that she would have to complete homework, and that it would affect her grade drastically if she didn’t complete her homework. Not only that, but she must “try” …show more content…
As my example shows above the 90/10 grading system is not fully preparing students for college. Assignments are worth much more than 10% of a student’s grade in college, and if they do not do the assignments they will not pass with a grade they would have passed with in high school. If you think about it, if a student at Austin High School did not do any practice work and did perfectly on their assessments, the student could pass with an A- at 90%. This does not happen at college and many students are not aware of this because they have grown so used to the grading system. As a PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Option) student I have learned the practice work is worth so much more than 10% in college, and often times if you do not do practice work, you will not get a good score on assessments. When students from Austin High School step into college many of them might be shocked to see how much practice work affects their grade and how much work they will have to do to stay on task. The grading system at Austin High school is not preparing students for the assignments and the grading scale for …show more content…
As a student who does their practice work, I feel as if I am not getting credit for doing my practice work as it barely impacts my grades. Students know practice work is important, but who wants to do work that is not benefiting their grades? Others may say that, “the 90/10 grading system is helping students by not penalizing them for practice scores preparing them for tests.” This again is true to a point. The grades of students who do badly on their practice assignments are not being brought down much. But, once one sees that they can do bad on practice assignments and still get good grades, they may not try as hard or put as much work into their grades. While there are cases of the 90/10 grading system helping students, it is doing more harm than

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

The work load in our curriculum today has caused student’s to feel pressured with work which in turn has caused to look at assignments given to them as another task to accomplish as opposed to another lesson to be learned. “I wanted them to go through an intellectual exercise. And they just wanted the answers,” Abeshouse says later. “By our standards, it’s cheating. By theirs, it’s efficiency.”…

Students need this information to know which areas they should improve upon or whether their time would be better spent elsewhere. For centuries, the world has been using grades as a means to determine the academic prowess of students. What began in 18th century English universities as a competition ranking system, was mimicked by the United States and turned into a numerical scale ranging from zero to four that determined final evaluations (Schneider, 2013). Use of the system continued to grow until it was common practice for…

Most of the parents become irate and urge them to study, not knowing what the problem. At a few schools, some teachers are using a software that sends letters to the parents of their students learned, their weaknesses, and how to improve them. The parents who received the letters felt more involved with what their child learns (Grinberg). If the parents know what their student learned and how well he/she does in class, that can become an accessible way the parents can know about what their child is learning and help them if they struggle or deal with problems. In summary, standard based grading can help a parent connect to their child’s…

Like many students, college students always want the easiest way to attain a good grade. That was what I experienced in high school. Teachers give credit for work completed rather than the accuracy of the work and students would receive credit for things that had nothing to do with materials being taught in class. For example, my teacher would give extra credit on essays for bringing tissue boxes to class. In high school, students get used to slacking off and procrastinating however teachers seemed like they did not care to help discourage these bad habits.…

It only takes a few bad grades on assignments to drop that hard earned grade. Nowadays in most schools across the nation assignments are not heavily based on the quality of the work but mostly on the effort and time put into the assignment itself. In class I put a lot of effort into the assignments assigned in class but the people that are around me don't help with the fact that they are always messing around. Although my work…

This assumption leads into the title subject “Tougher Grading Better For Students” this statement fails to take into account the fact that sometimes getting a good grade can motivate a student like nothing else in the world ever could, yes, some students do better when they are challenged, but I would like to meet a 12-year old who gets a poor score and actually thinks “Oh dear, I need to work harder” in today’s instantaneous reward based society with video games and social media to give instant gratification and affirmation that student can feel smart and accomplished through completing a video game, or he can feel accomplished by getting a good score. Once a student receives a good grade the rush they get from it can make them work even harder to receive that thrill, somewhat like a non-drug based…

When students take tests, they get overwhelmed and frustrated to where they can't concentrate. Everything they learn goes in one ear and out the other. When a student gets like that, it can not accurately measure their performance because many students are actually smarter than the test makes them out to be, or a student may have guessed on the ones he didn’t know. When students are put in classes based on their scores, it leads to kids taking classes that are too easy or too hard for them. Above all, it is difficult for them to learn anything, so they usually fail the class.…

The only thing that matters is if the student actually learned something. I do not agree with this statement because I believe these theories go hand in hand. If the student actually learns something, then he/she is going to get a higher grade and vice versa. If I’m an owner of a company, and a student applies for a job, I want to see the student’s grades and how well they did. Not if they “actually learned something.”…

Everything now a day is based off number, whether it’s ones SAT scores, standardized test scores, or most importantly, ones GPA. College students, and even High school strive to reach a perfect four point zero semesters, or even acquire high honor roll. Unfortunately, according to John Taylor Gatto, and his article “Against School”, achieving that perfect semester, or making high honor roll, doesn’t always translate to receiving a honest education, but rather just schooling. On the other hand, Kristina Rizga, the author of the article “Everything you’ve heard about failing school is wrong” paints the picture of a non-fictional, academically bright character that lacks when it comes to standardize testing. Using Gatto as a basis of comparison,…

Standard-based grading is better than typical, letter grading in public school education systems. It will be more useful to students, parents, teachers, and future places of education/work than letter grading is. Standard-based grading should be used in every school because it offers more accurate analysis of student understanding, benefits teachers, and gives advantages to parents and students. Firstly, standardized grading doesn’t offer a weak summary like letter grading does, it gives structure and a way to see student’s abilities clearer.…

Enrolling in a college level Composition class as a high school junior has been a challenge, but provides me with rewards such as free college credits and the preparation for post-secondary education. However, taking the difficult class does not benefit my GPA or class rank. Many times, I have considered joining a high school english class instead, as it is less challenging, and there is a higher probability of receiving a better grade. These downfalls often deprive me and other students from registering in rigorous courses, especially with an unweighted grading system.…

Jerson Rodriguez Summer homework Grades There are a lot of discussions that are taking place in classrooms based on the way students are graded. In some cases, students feel as if their final grades do not represent their overall performance in the classroom, but test scores are a major factor in our grades and one slip may cause your grade to drop unfairly. Our final grades in all of our courses are heavily dependent on our midterms and final test scores and that is no secret. Imagine if a student were to fail their midterm or final that is a huge blow to their final grade towards that subject and students know that if they fail some sort of test especially a midterm or final their average most certainly drops. The question…
