Personal Narrative: The Shot I Didn T Take

Improved Essays
The Shot I Didn’t Take “You can’t give up before even trying,” said my dad very often. My dad, Matt Matuska, is a firm believer on not giving up. My decision on not going out for basketball was somewhat hard on him because he really enjoyed watching me play. He also didn’t want to see me give up on something that I was “good at”. I didn’t think that I was good at basketball, and to be completely honest, I didn’t enjoy playing the game either. There comes a time in your life when you have to make tough decisions, and for me, this was one of them. Decisions can be grueling and very tough to make, and they also have positives and negatives. Not going out for basketball has impacted me in both positive and negative ways. While I miss the team …show more content…
I still miss the atmosphere of the girls in the locker room and the laughter that would come from everyone when we made fun of Mr. Judge. There were also many inside jokes that happened that I will never forget, most of which came from on the bus or in the car. In my high school experience so far, basketball practices were always the worst. With that being said, our coaches always made it somewhat fun, and there would always be a ton of laughter. Throughout the season, we had weekend tournaments and away games, which led to crazy car and bus rides. On these bus rides, we would go anywhere from telling funny stories to singing Hannah Montana songs. The atmosphere of the team was probably the biggest aspects I was going to miss. I always loved to laugh and joke around with the team. Now when I see the team laughing and joking, I get sad because I miss that part of basketball. Every decision has its strong and weak spots, and this decision was one of the weakest …show more content…
Freshman year was very long and stressful. I was involved in almost everything. I was in band, choir, volleyball, basketball, golf, softball, stem club, the year book staff, and many other activities outside of school. Overall, this was just very overwhelming for me. This year, I felt like I needed to give up something, and to me the thing I disliked the most was basketball, so I took a lot of thought in not going out. As previously said, I wanted to watch my brother wrestle. Not going out allowed me to watch his meets, as well as go to our school’s basketball games. With so much free time on my hands, I was able to come home after school and help my mom with the daycare kids. When I was involved in basketball, I didn’t have the opportunity to see them after school, and this made me grow closer to all of the children and grow my love for them so much stronger. I have also been able to keep up on my schoolwork better, and I have seen my grades improve a lot. I have always hated receiving bad grades, and this year I was able to focus and get better grades than I had last year. At some point, I needed to realize the stress of being in all of the extracurricular activities, and that it is good to have a little free time to treat myself and be able to relax. I also have many other hobbies that I had the opportunity to pursue without being in basketball. I really found the love for DIY projects and coloring.

All of the good things about basketball had vanished once my eighth grade season had started. I had a different coach than the year before. My new coach picked favorites and I was not one of them. There were mainly two girls she really liked out of the rest of the team. I'm pretty sure the reason why coach liked them was because of their popularity and because they were suck-ups.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

It all came down to what I wanted to do for that year in particular, when I quit I had thoughts about returning or coming back later but I knew nothing was permanent. After joining back it helped me in school a little bit but also set me back in some ways a lot as well. It was Thursday night and I was cold. I was walking down a dark alleyway following one of my friends to meet up with some our other friends and this was her shortcut. I constantly kept feeling the urge to turn away and run, but she held my hand so tightly I could not let go. Even though I did not mind, I was still shivering so much from the cold and cringing of the thought of getting caught. “Lee, I really don’t think that we should do this.”…

When I was younger I was an avid athlete, attempting various sports coupled with learning life lessons that I would never understand. I was an active, eager child ready to take on the world, trying to prove I was invincible. My life revolved around providing good report cards for my parents and waiting patiently for my father to come home from work so we could go to practice together. Unfortunately, most of the lessons and morals I came in contact with would never affect me, for I was not old enough to understand how cruel the world was.…

We would occasionally lift weights but the majority of our time was spent playing basketball. Along with other friends, we would walk to the YMCA’s downtown location after school and play until either it was time for us to leave or we were just too tired to continue. This quickly became the highlight of my day. No matter how hard the school day had been, I had going to the court with my friends to look forward to. Unfortunately my source of joy turned into pain.…

My blind spots in terms of people that I might be leaving out and the opportunities I might be missing are with people who are generally quiet and don’t talk much, also with people who talk a lot. I don’t talk to people I don’t know that well because it’s like what is there to talk about? It’s kinda awkward at first because sometimes there is simply nothing to say. Now I realize that I could be missing out on some interesting people, but when you try to talk to someone and they give you short answers and don’t seem interested in talking to you then why should you try? Another blind spot I have is fear because I feel like if I talk to certain people they are gonna be like why is she talking to me?!…
