I can relate to the main character, Cassie, before the waves, because like me, she was a smart and reserved person who never took risks. With the arrival of the Others, her whole persona changed. I believe that the dramatic change from reserved to alert and cynical defines her in a whole new way. Futhermore, using backstories to explain the events occurring in the present is ingenious. For example, when Cassie describes her life, during the 4th wave, she backtracks all the way back to the arrival of the Others to explain how she arrived at this point. This puts everything in context and allows me to understand what’s happening. One of the main turning points in her life was during the 4th wave, when she shot a soldier not knowing if he was an Other or human. She reflects back on this, thinking that the Others have turned every human against their own, in hopes that they’ll destroy themselves. Analyzing the characters, Cassie’s father reminds of my own father, someone who is always caring and careful, wanting to make the world a better place. The other main character is Cassie’s younger brother, Sammy, who was sent to a military camp, on a school bus, with a bunch of other kids. To me, he seems like a child with knowledge beyond his years. However, he also possesses an innocence which helps build his character. So far, I believe the theme of the book is to enjoy what you have at the moment because you can
