The 5th Wave, written by Rick Yancy, is a dystopian novel with a female heroine that takes the genre to a new level. Many post-apocalyptic books are lead by the fall of government or destruction of the environment. However, this novel involves a more dramatic factor, the extra-terrestrial. Additionally, The 5th Wave, is cleverly written through two different perspectives, one of them being the strong female lead. In the story, alien intruders, called the “others”, send a series of five traumatic waves to earth. The sole purpose of each wave is to kill the human race. With each wave, billions of people die. Both young teenagers, the protagonists had to overcome the death of family, as a result of the first four waves. Throughout the novel, they both struggle with the idea of having little to no family left. The strong female lead, Cassie, can relate to those of other novels, like Katniss from The Hunger Games. Both Cassie and Katniss are looking out for their family, though they demonstrate it in different ways. Katniss volunteers for her sister to save her life, while Cassie spends the entirety of the story searching for her lost brother. Ben Parish on the other hand, becomes depressed and almost dies because he knows none of his family has survived. The two meet and are connected at the end through a common enemy, the “others.” Though confusing at first, this allows the reader to understand many humans are making every effort to survive. Without seeing this dystopian world through two eyes would lead us to believe the main character is the last one on earth. However, because the author created two protagonists, one can infer that there is some lasting hope
