Superior Essays
Imagine a world without role models. A world thrown into chaos. A world full of the wrong morales. Everyone cheats and lies to get a head. No one can be trusted not even family. However this won't happen because there are many good role models. One of the best way to find a good role model is to read a book. Books are full of great role models not just for kids but adults too. Three characters from books that teach life lessons are Cassie who teaches to stay positive, Four who teaches to hold on to hope, and Percy who teaches that fate can be changed.
First,Cassie from the book The 5th Wave teaches readers to see the positive side of things. One example is, “I guess my family was luckier than most. The Fourth Horseman rode off with mom, but Dad, Sammy, and I survived” (47, Yancey). In this quote Cassie is saying that her mom died from the third wave but the rest of her family survived. The

Four teaches readers to hold on to hope. An example of this is, “No. Don't give up hope just yet. It's the last thing to go. When you have lost hope you have lost everything”( ). Four knows from his own experience not to give up hope. Once hope is gone nothing is left. When hope is gone there is no longer anything to fight or live for. Hope is the reason, the push to keep on living. The belief that things will improve if you keep on going. Another example is when, “In the beginning we were a group of nine. Three are gone, dead. There are six of us left. They are hunting us, and they won't stop until they have killed us all. I am Number Four. I know that I am next”( ). Four knows he is next in line to be killed. Hope is the only thing that can keep him going. The hope of of getting home to his planet. Reviving the nearly dead planet. Starting a new life with the other six. No longer living in fear that they could die at anytime. Four shows that hope needs to be held on to, by the fact that he keeps

Hope is what motivates people to survive, and inspires action. Sometimes hope can be misplaced and be consequential, as discovered by the characters in Alive and Into Thin Air. The book, The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, begins with Cassie's Sullivan describing flashbacks in her life. She starts with small memories like her father gifting her a telescope and then shifts to thinking of how she wishes she was still the person she was before, the one that hadn't killed people, quite a dramatic change. So far in the book, I have read about the first three waves. The first wave destroys all the electronics on earth, the second destroys most of the world itself and the third one is a virus that kills of about seven billion people.
