The 6th Mass Extinction? Species of animals and plants go extinct all the time due to their lack of evolutionary ‘fitness’, for example, the giant panda is on the brink of extinction because it can only eat one food, and can only copulate a couple weeks out of the year, but sometimes, It 's not their fault… a mass extinction is “the extinction of a large number of species within a relatively short period of time, as between the Cretaceous and Tertiary Periods when three-quarters of all species on Earth, including most dinosaurs, became extinct” (“Mass Extinction”). Planet Earth is on the brink of a 6th mass extinction because of humans contributions to climate change, poaching, and deforestation.
Climate change due to human’s effect on planet earth could be major cause of another mass extinction of animal life. In a TIME magazine article “Animals Under Siege”, it was stated that “the intergovernmental panel on climate change has reported that warming could put as much as 70% of species at a greater risk of extinction.” If global warming isn 't addressed now, we could be killing ourselves, as well as our food and natural resources. Presuming that 70% of all species are at risk, it could create a domino effect for the reason that species depend on other species to survive; if those species that are endangered struggle to find food, the entire ecosystem could collapse. Since the 40’s, the Antarctic peninsula’s average temperature has risen a staggering 3-4 degrees (Petit).…
