Physical exercise plays a very important roll in peoples lives. Its known to relieve stress, help ones mental heath, cultivates a social life and it instills learning skills that can helps with ones future schooling. Although sport is played for enjoyment, it can also be played competitively as a career. Unfortunately the sporting industry is a very tough and competitive field that requires many hours of hard work and training. A simple test that might be able to test your sporting ability is called the 2D 4D ratio. The ratio does not appear to change at puberty and is fixed prenatally- within the first trimester. (Garn, Burdi, Babler and Stinson- 1975; Manning 1998) Therefore this would allow you to anticipate …show more content…
Later on Dr. Glenn Wilson confirmed that 2D: 4D finger ratio was determined by sex hormone exposure in the womb. (Dr. Glenn Wilson of King’s College)
This sex hormone exposure would refer to various androgens (natural steroids) during the fetal stage. Androgens are male sex hormone that promotes the development and maintenance of the male sex characteristics. The major androgen is testosterone and testosterone in particular is strongly linked with competition and athleticism.
Testosterone promotes the growth of the right hemisphere of the brain, and for sportsmen, this part of the brain, facilitates the visual spatial ability and the vascular system stability.
Research indicates that a low 2d 4d ratio is attributed to a justifiable relation to the physical ability and athleticism of a sportsman. This ratio will be lower in males than females. Men, being under the ratio of 1, and woman, being over the ratio of 1. Due to men having a higher level of tetosterone than woman. (Manning, J. T. (2002). Digit ratio)(Rushton, J. P. (1997) )( Michael Mills, Psychology …show more content…
Later in time Dr. Manning published several research articles showing the correlations between low 2D: 4D ratio and improved athletic ability across sports.
He proved that the lower the 2D 4D ratio is, the more your athletic ability tends to improve. He said that sports which involve balls require an ability to make quick visual-spatial judgments as to where a ball is going to land. Manning found after testing subjects, that the men with lower 2D: 4D ratios performed better on tests of visual-spatial ability. (John T.
