The 2016 summer Olympics will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5. This tradition started in 776 BC in ancient Greece (“The Real Story”). The final games of the ancient Olympics ended in 393 AD because of the fact that a Greek ruler named Theodosios decreed that all cult practices, including the Olympics, be ended (Cartwright). Barron Pierre de Coubertin, a French aristocrat, suggested 1503 years later the idea of bringing back the Olympics in 1804 because he thought the more physical education would better the military (McNamara).Since their revival in 1804, the Olympics have kept some of the events the same, but also added and removed some. One of the most noticeable differences between the ancient and modern Olympics is the amount of events. The ancient Olympics consisted of a few field events and only one running event. The first running event, won by a cook named Corebus, was a 192 meter sprint (“Olympic Games”). The current Olympics include 24 track and field events for the men and 23 for the women. Some of these events include the 100 meter sprint, 200 meter sprint , 400 meter sprint and 1500 meter run (“Athletics”). In the ancient Olympics one of the biggest attractions was boxing because of the fact that civilians were enthralled by means of the violence; today, boxing has changed significantly since then. The Ancient and Modern Olympics have many striking similarities and differences in many events, types of athletes, and intent of the game.
