During the 1920’s – 1950’s the child guidance movement took off after the 1st world war. As the great Depression continued, governments were interested in the future of their countries and were investing into the childhood mental health sector. Rogers became influenced by this movement and helping students to become self-directed learners . He worked in the Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, (1928) within a laboratory setting with troubled children and adults. Here he became influenced by Otto Rank and his students and also wrote the book ‘Treatment of the problem child’ which massively influenced person-centered theory.
