The veil of “online” seems to hide the players themselves physically, but not to the fullest. By choosing which gender, what kind of clothes that the players choose their characters to wear, that character itself becomes the identity, or the representative of the player in that certain game world. It would not matter if that particular character is the similar representation of the player itself or completely different. As long as there is some kind of identity, players judge and get their first impressions through their looks. The research done by students in University of Guelph have focused on online gaming and its’ impact on gender. The most evident problem was the harassment that the female players got by the male players while playing the online games. The research shows that some male players often tend to express their masculinity and dominance over female online more than they can when they are offline. The half anonymity that most online games have creates problems, and the original intention soon gets lost ("Women Face Harassment in Online Gaming …show more content…
A study composed by UCLA found that 93 percent of the communication that is found to be effective is through nonverbal communications. In another study it was also verified that 7 percent of the communication is with actual words, 38 percent is with voice quality, and then the rest of the 55 percent is nonverbal communication. Because when we are born, we rely on the nonverbal communication to communicate our feelings with others, this kind of communication for us is done very unconsciously and very automatic. The brain concludes nonverbal is a very honest expression compared to the verbal expression ("Nonverbal Communications"). Even though verbal seems like a natural form of communication, the brain is more accustomed to nonverbal communication. Due to these reasons, humans can, by nature, connect deeply through nonverbal messages rather than using verbal

They may argue that the media needs to draw attention to violent videogames to keep the general population aware of what is popular. These ideas have their merit, we do need to be aware of the content we purchase for ourselves or others, but there are some definite counterexamples. Tetris is the most popular mobile game of all time. It has sold over 100 million copies, not counting endless knock-offs and the like. Minecraft is a game with little to no violence intended, and it outsells hundreds of other titles.…

As video games become more widespread, many complaints have been placed on the level of violence and sex present in these games. What is less spoken about is the level of sexism in video games, both in and out of the game. Research indicates that sexism in these games is a prevalent issue that needs to be addressed as video gaming becomes more popular, especially the effect this has amongst females. Thus, sexist video games are a harmful influence on female players, resulting in lower self-esteem and withdrawal from active participation to discouragement from playing. This is evident through the degrading sexist depictions of female characters, sexual harassment from male players during online gaming, and the controversies and sexism in the…

When you and other gaming companies chose to degrade women’s images in every video game, young men will begin to believe that is the way things are meant to be. They will start expecting women to wear little to no clothing, which will cause them to turn up there noses to anyone less than the stereotype that these games have engraved in the player’s heads. The women that play all of these games start believing this is the norm as well, and they will begin sexualizing themselves to please men, rather that relying on their intellect and character to get men interested. Over sexualization of women in videogames, such as Laura Croft, negatively cultivates societies view of how woman should dress and act, as well as their competence in specific…
