Many different animals develop different strategic foraging behaviours to survive the winter months. The black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) are a songbird that can be observed throughout North America and remain year round even during the cold winters (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). During the winter the chickadees form an average flock size of about six to eight, but this number can vary (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). In the flock there is a social hierarchy and the dominant individual demonstrates certain behaviours such as vocalizing, bluffs threat, chasing, displacement or fighting to state its dominance (Barkan, 1990, p. 393, Hartzler, 1970, p. 429; Odum, 1942, p. 521). Dominance in a black-capped chickadee is observed when one individual known as a subordinate submits to the dominant individual that is perceived to be more prevailing in…

Food is arguably mankind's best friend, but also its worst enemy. How could something as insignificant as a potato divide the different social classes in France? In Tom Standage’s An Edible History of Humanity, he describes in great detail the role potatoes played in French social life. In a world of digitally edited photography and Photoshop masters, Polaroid pictures have once more become a trend. The instantaneous image of life unabridged appeals because it refuses to portray life through any rose-colored or edited lens, instead allowing memory to appreciate the sanctity of returning to a moment lost. However, through this nostalgia, the brain crops and edits the photograph just as one would on a computer, freezing the moment in memory as better, brighter, and more beautiful than it ever was in life. E. B. White reflects upon this phenomenon in his memoir “Once More to the Lake,” elaborating upon the nature of time, memory, and the human’s perception of reality. Through a heartfelt story about his experience at a lake with…

Back then, a plate with food on it could never be traded for another plate that has food on it, for a clean one must come in between. We no longer eat from a shared dish but are each served. It is now considerably friendly for people to give each other “tastes” from their plates. Proper customs used to involve four places to be laid at a table’s four sides, even when eating alone! I wonder if this was more of a ritual or a way for people to feel less lonely?…

Almost everyone has experienced food differently when they are sick, or have been affected by their senses when a food looks unappealing. It’s almost like having a stuffy nose can make food seem more bland or unenjoyable, or like a certain appearance of a food can influence the way one perceives its taste. This actually does occur, because our senses do in fact influence one another. Smell and taste are both identified by a chemical sensation system, with smell being processed by the olfactory cells in the brain, and taste processed by gustatory cells in the brain. Other senses also influence others as well, like the way eating in a crowded or noisy environment can influence they way one perceives their food (Yan & Dando, 2015).…
