It was Thanksgiving morning and heading to downtown Detroit. It wasn’t my typical Thursday morning with the sun glaring through the glass beating down on my face. I was with my best friend, Josh, and his family. I remember his mom saying “Helping those less fortunate is more rewarding than you think guys.” Didn’t think feeding homeless a Thanksgiving dinner was fun, I was ignorant tot the idea of it, but I didn’t know going to help less fortunate would open up a perspective on life I did not know about.

When we arrived we planned for people to come getting the hall ready for homeless enjoy a Thanksgiving holiday. Nothing was pre-cooked it was all handmade and made with love from those who were there. We readied your normal turkey dinner

Food has always been a social event. From the great dinners of the roman household, the last supper, and the good old fashioned American thanksgiving, people have always been able to associate their favorite foods with their season for eating, the event the food was most common at and what emotions were carried with that particular time. The iconic thanksgiving turkey is a prime example. Dining, with or without company can invoke feelings of emotion as well as physical contentment. Such psychological impact may invoke reminiscent moments of nostalgia when eating a food that has heavy emotional impact or has ties to memories.…

What, to the homeless man, is Thanksgiving? I answer: a holiday that reminds him, more than any other hungry day in the year, the gluttony and selfishness to which he is the constant prey. To him, your feasts are ridiculous; your thankful humility, just empty words; your giving attitude, bitterly ironic; your television specials, a mockery of his suffering; your holiday spirit, vanishing in an instant; your clamoring for generosity and kindness, painful to his ears; your pumpkins and autumn leaves, your peace and togetherness, with all the Macy’s Parades and cranberry sauce, are, to him mere frivolity, excess, wastefulness, greed, and close-fisted behavior- a tablecloth thrown over miserly deeds which would shock a room full of businessmen.…

I believe the Friar’s quote illustrates the need for quintessential people to both foster and expand positive change. In this current era, people are opportunistic and only do behaviors that are selfless in nature for image. Still, to be despondent means that we have lost hope in one another and that we can longer find people of true virtue. Never fret though, for I know that there are those who seek to improve humanity without selfish intentions. For instance, my friend Jessenia, via a small action changed my view of what it meant to be truly compassionate for the least of our neighbors.…

On the first day of Urban Plunge, I went to the Emergency Family Shelter in Downtown Seattle. The Emergency Family Shelter is an overnight shelter that accepts mothers and children starting at 4:30 pm, providing a warm meal, a place to sleep, shower and get new clothes. I, along with four of my classmates, served food to mothers and children currently experiencing homelessness. That night, there were around 17 mothers and 34 children sleeping in the shelter. Along with serving food, we also had the opportunity to talk to the mothers and children and we were given a tour around the shelter.…

Throughout the day, I find myself going through the motions of life without thinking twice. I wake up, go to school, go to work or dance, do homework, then go to bed. In between activities, I spend a majority of my time on my phone or watching Netflix. I rarely, if ever, think twice about the privileges that I have been given because of the social class I was raised in. It was not until after I started volunteering to do service work that I realized how fortunate I was.…
