For 2.5 billion people, that last question isn’t just a hypothetical—it’s their lived reality. In an effort to draw attention to those who lack access to the most basic sanitary infrastructure, the World Toilet Organization and the United Nations have declared November 19th as World Toilet Day. Every year millions of people—many of them children—suffer illnesses, some of them fatal, that could have been prevented entirely with proper access to a toilet. While most plumbing businesses at the time appealed to Victorian prudishness by making shopping for bathroom fixtures as private and discreet as possible, Crapper took a radically different approach. Bathroom showrooms, proudly and prominently displaying toilets and other sanitary accoutrements, filled Crapper & Co.’s store and were readily visible from the street outside. The showrooms caused a sensation. Everybody knew about Crapper & Co.’s toilets and, after being installed by Edward, Prince of Wales (and future King Edward VII) in his palace, everybody wanted them too. Bold marketing and royal approval helped Crapper shift public perceptions of indoor flushable toilets, setting a new standard for basic household

While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead.…

Mrs. Spencer had hip surgery, so she couldn’t bend her hip past 90 degrees. This means she is not allowed to bend over to pick up objects from the floor. It was only the 1500’s when the first ever built flush toilet was built. It was only until the 1900’s when the first ever working flush toilet and put it into production. I’m still surprised that the first built toilet was made in 1596 and wasn’t put into production until the early 1900’s Thomas Crapper used a 2ft deep oval bowl flushing with 7.5 gallons of water. 20 people are allowed to use the toilet between flushes.…

Do you know whether your hometown is the world’s capital of a special product? There are many cities across this great country, as well as the world, which are famously recognized for one specialty, or another. Cities are known as the capital of underwear, pink flamingos, zippers, toilet paper, or toothpicks, just to name a few. The story in which the excerpt given is from, is about Sarosh. As Nariman, the storyteller, retells the event has gone through we learn that Sarosh is an immigrant from India that once moved to Toronto and struggled with the “conventional” way of using a toilet. “The French have respect for others by respecting themselves. They pay close attentions to their actions. Not because someone may be observing them, but because everybody may be looking at them. An so, an Englishman stuck in traffic will pick his nose to kill time, while the Frenchman will look in the mirror, adjust his tie, hair, and run a hand over his brow or a mustache. A Frenchman will passionately kiss his girlfriend or wife in any public place [having lived in Paris, I attest to that—JMP], while an Englishman will do most of intimate activities in darkness and under covers [I exaggerate here—but not by much: I have two Anglophone ex-wives.…

If there are people living there, the chances of there being a restroom located nearby is very high. They are used very frequently because it is human nature. Unfortunately, if they are not managed properly, they could be a substantial waste of resources.
