Thanksgiving Classroom Reflection

While teaching a group of second grade students a lesson on Thanksgiving traditions there would be certain accommodations I would need to make for different disabilities. The lesson would entail details of Native Americans and what their customs were. During the lesson a video would be played showing the students a Native American dance and how they dressed. For a student with a hearing disability this video would need to have subtitles. I would need to place the student in the front of the classroom so they had a clear view of the screen. They volume would need to be increased so they had the same opportunity to learn from the video as the rest of the students without a disability. I would speak to the student about the day’s lesson and ask

“See What I Mean” In the video “See What I Mean” I noted numerous differences between the hearing and deaf communities. During the video in a class of hearing students and teacher, a student arrived late to class and when he arrived he spoke nothing, made no eye contact, did not disrupt the class, and the teacher did not acknowledge his tardiness. In a deaf class, the student arrived late and the teacher stopped class to ask why he was late, made eye contact with each other, and the student explained himself and told the class valuable information about traffic delaying him from arriving to class. In another scenario two hearing friends when departing, said their goodbyes quick.…

Running head: PSYCHOLOGICAL 2 As a rehabilitation counselor in attending an individualized educational plan on Michael’s behalf I would suggest that it is very important since he is deaf to provide notes of the key elements of the classroom material and discussion that could be taken by another classmate or by a hired paraprofessional note taker. The reason why is that students with hearing loss are unable to overhear the teacher’s full discussion surrounding them, which can result into gaps in their academic skills. Michael should be allowed extra time in processing his classroom material this accommodation to ensure he is understanding the learning material completely. Michael is in a regular classroom with hearing students, however, he will…

Explaining a particular experience to one who is not capable of hearing may be challenging if not impossible. I, as a person with hearing capabilities, have the ability to hear fire alarms, lyrics in music, my parents calling my name, and considerably more. I would explain hearing to an individual that is deaf would be through signing, as I have taken American Sign Language and learned that people who are deaf hear through their eyes. The way I would describe sound would be with my facial expressions, signs, and word choices. Either being very loud, large, small, or soft, there are innumerable facial expressions that may be leveraged to show and explain how something is or sounds.…
