How would someone react to an attempt of being stolen from? Well in the short story “Thank You, Ma'am” by Langston Hughes, Roger a young pickpocket fails an attempt at stealing Mrs. Jones’s pocket book by falling to the ground! In addition, Mrs. Jones steps on him, and kicks him, and even makes him pick it up! Not only did she kick him, but she dragged him home with her to feed him. This short story shows many acts of boldness, kindness, and wisdom. In the short story “Thank You, M’am,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones shows she is firm, generous, and wise. Mrs. Jones is firm in the short story “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes. She reveals she is unyielding when she takes Roger by his shirt and shakes him immediately after he tried to snatch her purse. When she does this it shows how she is single-minded because she is being very assertive to the situation. Also, she boldly took his shirt and shook him which shows she already knew what she had to do before thinking about it, or Roger would have most likely runaway.“Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here” (173). This quote describes Mrs. Jones as unwavering because she demands Roger to pick up her pocketbook without giving him a chance to say no because she is firm. In addition, it shows that she is firm when she takes control of the situation Roger put her in when he tried to steal from her and makes him do what she asks of him. Jones’s handling of Roger shows she is firm, generous, and wise. Mrs. Jones is firm when she demands to Roger to pick up, and give her pocketbook to her and not let him go and pick it up herself. She also shows generosity when she feeds Roger and provides him with money for shoes. Mrs. Jones then talks to Roger and relates to him which shows she is wise.
