In the short story "Thank you Ma'am", by Langston Hughs, Hughs highlights that no matter how bad of a situation you're in; you can get overcome it with kindness. The protagonist, Luella Bates Washington Jones, is teaching a young boy named Roger right from wrong, after he tried to steal her pocketbook for blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones says, "'I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t already know" (Hughs 3). The fact that Mrs. Jones brings back her past trying to teach Roger a lesson demonstrates that she has also been in a similar situation. Women are often looked at as weak, inferior and only use is to bear children and raise them, compared to men who are looked at as strong, superior, and gods on Earth, women are not looked at as equal to men. The play Big Love by Charles L. Mee, displays the different views of genders and their thoughts on marriage and equality with the opposite sex. Comparison Essay It seems like “Thank You Ma’am” and “Because of Mr. Terupt” Are very different. For instance, one is about a lady who was walking then a pickpocket tried to steal her purse but fails and then the lady keeps him at home and sets him straight, while the other is about a new teacher and their class that takes them down a scary, funny road as students cause trouble and the teacher doesn’t necessarily care. But if you look closer into the two stories, you will see that they both have a common theme, for instance, in both stories the author tries to show us the forgiveness and how it helps with most situations. As stated in the introduction, forgiveness is a big role in these two stories.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

The memoir; “A Lesson Not Learned” by Carol Sherman-Jones, follows a moment of her childhood in which her careless and forgetful nature resulted in a strict “lesson” from her father. Jones recounts a few examples of her younger, more innocent and reckless days; the one that stuck with her being the time she lost a very special hat, and her father's reaction. Unknowing of her father's awareness to the situation, she attempts it cover it up by playing around and lying about the hat in question. Her father, as a lesson and as punishment, slaps the young Carol, resulting in both a hurt cheek, as well as a damaged image of her father and the trust she held for him.…

The poem Let America be America Again is a plead or argument for the return to the original principles of freedom that our country has seemingly forgotten. The author sees America as broken and its people have lost sight of the ultimate goal of freedom and happiness. Examining the multiple types of oppressed Americans, the poem begs the idea that America has lost its way but can return to its former glory with the help of its people. A memorable phrase, or portion, of the poem that stood out to me was the following questions.…

Now what exactly was the civil war, well the Civil War was was a civil war that was fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. As a result of the long-standing controversy over slavery, war broke out in April 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, shortly after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated. Evidence that proves my case is, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, will little note, nor longer remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” This proves my point above because, President Lincoln addresses that these…
